Sometime back in the mid-ninties, I discovered the last private park in Manhattan…Gramercy Park. And then I moved there…just around the corner from the Park on Third. I was blown away by the thick iron-gated slab of green in an otherwise seedy neighborhood back then. The contrast between the stately townhouses on the south and east sides juxtaposed with the large gilded age co-ops on the north and west always intreaguged me. Morning and night, I would walk my dog, Payfone, around the park and up and down the surrounding streets occasionally running into one smiley and warm Julia Roberts who would get down on the pavement with Payfone and scratch his belly until there were plugs of mixed-breed hair blowing up people’s stoops. 19th between Irving and Third was and remains one of my favorites. Strolls a little south to see who was playing at Irving Plaza were a regular thing. Molly’s on Third is still the absolute best Irish Pub in Manhattan…nothing even comes close. And, have you seen the ceiling of the National Arts Club’s Bar at night? Tiffany blue displayed in its finest form. A few years ago, my buddy, Jesse Shafer, and I did a little video on the history of Gramercy Park. I think we did a pretty good job. Check it out!
